SUP Sri Lanka

On December 6th, 2016 Kev flew to Colombo, Sri Lanka with little more than a 13'2 Red Paddle Explorer stand-up paddleboard (SUP) and a hammock. He hiked up over 2200 metres into Horton Plains National Park to find the source of The Mahaweli River, the longest river in Sri Lanka. From there he walked for four days until the river became deep enough to begin paddling at Kotmale Dam. As the river descended hundreds of metres, what was rocky and well populated became sandy banked and more remote. For the last week of the journey, Kev encountered 14ft crocodiles and wild elephants on a daily basis. Sleeping alone in the jungle every night, fearful of leopards and the notoriously aggressive sloth bear.

Once Kev had reached the Bay of Bengal, becoming the first person to stand up paddleboard the Mahaweli River, he headed to the south coast and paddled over 100km of coastline, camping on beaches every night. From there he headed back in land to paddle sections of three other rivers: The Polwatta, Gin Ganga and Bentota Ganga, once again encountering dangerous rapids and large crocodiles. His trip finished in Puttalam Lagoon, paddling from tiny island to island alongside pink dolphins and camping with friendly local fisherman.
